A Good Morning

This was done while waiting for some people a couple of days ago. It has been a while since I have sat in the sun and drawn trees. I had almost forgotten how much fun they are.

Organic Evolution

I am incredibly slow when it comes to painting. I love to do it, but it takes me a long time. I tend not to plan it out and then render it, but instead I'll do a couple of thumbnails in a sketchbook or on post-its, then drop a bit of colour on the canvass. I normally work a couple pieces at the same time so that while I'm working on one I can ponder another. I'll drop in a colour, hate it, take it out, drop in another, change it, prime part of it again, and put in something else. Then I'll leave it for a while and let it distill like a good whisky. In contrast to production work that I've done, I let my paintings evolve as they wish. Unfortunately that makes for a slow process.

This a preview of a new series that I'm working on called organic evolution, which explores the layers upon layers of text, colours, and stencils, that are applied as I let them grow. They are on wood panels, and the figures (any organic parts) show the wood grain through all the other layers. Clothing, jewelry, etc, is painted out into the background.

I really like the direction that this series is taking, and how the first piece turned out. It is 24x48 inches on wood panel.

It has been a while, but here is a little something. In the past while I have been really into finding the beauty in the ugly. Things like car crashes in flower fields.
I saw a movie over the weekend called ONCE, about a musician. There was a line in one of the songs that I loved:

I know that I missed posting yesterday, but I was busy dealing with the gianormanty that is my Christmas tree. We get our tree in a lot that is run by a youth group of a church in our neighbourhood. during the winter they sell Christmas trees, and in the summer they sell ice cream. Their cones in the summer are really cheep, and they give you one stacked so tall you can't see the top. well this year they hit me with a tree to match their cones. It is a great tree, but it's a big'un.

I'll be decorating our Christmas tree this weekend with my family, and to continue the holiday spirit I'll be posting a painting, drawing, or doodle every day until Christmas. Ungrounded

Some time ago I began a series of paintings during a time when a lot of things in my life were less than solid - my career path, my employment situation, the city that I was living in, to name a few. These works began to celebrate the beauty in things that do not touch the ground; thus are ungrounded like I was (am) from time to time.

Matte Paintings

Last year I was a matte painter on a show called Bo on the Go. It is a 3D show, but only the foreground and mid ground levels are "built", and the far background is digitally painted, and dropped in the back. I had a teacher a Sheridan that used to do giant matte paintings for live action films, sun sets and mountain scapes etc. These are the same idea, just without hundreds of feet of storage space.

Anyway, Bo premiered earlier this month, so I am now able to post some of these works.

Since finishing my last storyboard job last July, I've been looking for more work, and painting. this is one is about 3 by 4, but I've been doing some larger ones as well.

Balance

Life truly is all about balance. The powers that be are also not without a sense of humor. I experienced this first hand today.

I received some amazing news this afternoon that I had been waiting on for almost a year, and within 5 minutes I was pulled over for speeding. I hadn't even finished talking about it. The best part was that I was wearing this shirt at the time.

Organics

I did this drawing recently in hopes of doing something similar as a painting. The concept behind it is that only the organic parts would be visible, and things like clothing, and jewellery, etc, would be omitted and blended into the background.

I've been doing some drawings on this idea for a while, and the painting that I did for the skateboard art auction falls into this as well. The more that I do the harder it is to find poses that are uncovered enough to be interesting, but not be too naked.

I had a really good drawing day yesterday, and I thought I'd share five minutes of it. Why the good day? I'm not sure. It could have been the much needed sleep I had, or maybe exercising in the morning. I wish I had the key to good drawing days. it is probably right beside the holy grail.

Art Auction

It has been a while since my last post, but one of the many things that i have been busy with is a board for the Halifax Skatepark Coalition's annual art auction. www.halifaxskateparks.org/

Normally at this point I'm still changing my mind as to what my board will look like, but I finished early this year. I had it hanging at home just long enough to become attached. I was a little sad yesterday when I handed it over to the guys at pro skates. I have to keep telling myself that it will go to a good home, and it's for a good cause. I do get paid on Friday, so maybe I can find something to take it's place.

Red Hair Girl

The hair in this drawing doesn't follow the tutorial in Murray's recent post on his blog, but I like it anyway. It's kinda funny that we were both thinking of hair this week. It must be something in the water in Halifax.

There is nothing like seeing things from a child's perspective. The excitement that can be heard in the voice of a youngin' who has just spotted a pile of Teddy bears in the grocery store is joy in the purest form.

I was looking for another drawing that I did in first year, but it isn't available right now. This one will have to do instead. I think it is from 1998 or 99, I'm not quite sure. It is normally found hanging in my living room. It will be very brittle someday because light isn't kind to newsprint, but that is normally what I do life drawing on, with nu pastel.

My first Christmas after I finished school I was so incredibly financially deficient that I painted magnets (an idea borrowed from another friend) and gave them away as prizes in cookie mix. I'm not sure how many I did, but this is the only one that I have left. It is acrylic on magnet.

This is a quick sketch that I have been hanging on to from about 2000. At that time I couldn't get enough of terracotta colerease pencils. I tend to go through phases where whatever I'm using is the best thing ever invented.

I know that this monkey is missing an arm, but I'm posting it anyway. It is really hard to resist going back in and adding the other arm, but that would take it out of that time period that it was done in. I would say that it is from about 2002, maybe 2001.

I remember doing these with the ends of three cans of paint after doing another piece about an hour earlier. They were a big doodle, done without an idea, or a sketch to use the rest of my paint. circa 1992ish.

This is from the same life drawing session as the one from yesterday. I don't remember why, but for some reason I have a bunch of sketches that are not of the model from that class. Maybe the model was doing longer poses, and I tend to like shorter ones. I'm sure that it is my animation background that makes ten or fifteen minutes poses long.

This is a drawing of my sweetie from a life drawing session in 1999. I tend to draw other people when the model's poses aren't working for me, if I'm having a bad night, or if I finish my drawing before the time runs out in the pose.

If I could have a life drawing session every day I would be very happy. It is like chess where it takes no time to pick it up for the first time, but a lifetime to master. There is always room for improvement. This one goes back to around 2003, nu pastel on paper.

I finally found something with a date on it. While testing markers I saw this in the shape of the splotches, so I defined it a little. This was one of the post-it drawings that I liked enough to keep.

This is a little thumnail of part of a story that a bus station securiety guard told me around 1997. It is about 3 inches tall, done with a combination of markers and colour pencils.

Day Eleven

This drawing is from 2001, and is born from my love of old school Hong Kong kung fu films. The worse the over dub the better, as long as the kung fu is good. Maybe it is because the hero normally takes the moral high ground. Maybe it is because if the choreography is good it as beautiful as any dance performance.

This one goes back to early 2005. It is a doodle that was done while waiting for other things that i was working on to roll through the approval prossess. I really enjoy working with ink and acrylic paint pens. Mostly because the results are so fast, unlike most approval prossesses.

This is from a life drawing session shortly after I descovered that fountain pen ink is water soluble. I think it was around 2003. It changed my world. Using a brush with water and the pen at the same time I was able to do tonal washes, as well as work the drawing.

I don't have many pictures of the murals that I have done, but this is one of the few from my early days. It stayed up for a long time, untill another writer put something up beside it. The city buffed them both a week later. I think that part of the beauty of street art is how tempory it is.

I found this book in the early nineties and started using it as a sketchbook. It was first published in 1950 on the physiology and technique of marriage. The bits that I read had some interesting points, but it was much more fun to draw in. I know that the drawing is a little stiff, but so was the book.

Day Six

Towards the end of high school I was busy trying to bend the rules before I completely understood them. That point may have been my purest drawing stage because I was always drawing for the sake of drawing. I wasn't necessarily trying to get better, figure out what was appealing, or what worked well. The joy wasn't clouded by rules, or analysis. I just did it because I enjoyed it. I still work that way, but not as often. The days that I just feel it, and don't think about it are my best days.

In sorting through older pieces and wanting to describe them, I am quickly learning why so many artists date their work. I'm having to remember where things fit into the timeline of my experiences to find a date for them.
I did this one in my last years of high school, while taking classes at the Ottawa School of Art. I was able to take a class in portraits taught by someone who did courtroom drawings. It was one of the better art classes that I have taken, because I felt that I learned a lot, but I still wanted another 10 years with that teacher.

This one goes back to 2000, when I was going through a phase of drawing fat characters. I still find them fun to draw, even though they don't turn up quite as often.

These are gestures done with a brush pen in my sketchbook around 1999, and the biggest of them is about 2 1/2 inches high. I have a love hate relationship with working ink because it is all about confidence. I find that it makes me let go, and loosen up because your thought process has to be more linear. In that, however, on a bad drawing day nothing can save you.

Fridge

I'm reading a book right now by Tony Hawks; the song and book writer, not the skater, Tony Hawk. He made a drunken bet that he could hitch-hike around the circumference of Ireland with a fridge in a month. I haven't finished yet, but so far he is doing quite well. His fridge has been surfing, they've met a king, and spent a lot of time in local pubs. Hearing stories of travel always gives me itchy feet for adventure.

Post-its

I tend to draw on post-its a lot. Partly because they are always at hand, partly because they aren't intimidating. I always start a new sketch book on the second page because it alleviates the pressure of doing something terrible as a first drawing in a new book. I find it is similar with post-its. A bad drawing can be thrown away without any guilt, and I can keep the ones that I like. If anyone knows where I can find post-its in earth tones let me know.
